Is Interstate 35E Through Waxahachie Compatible with GMC Super Cruise?

September 23rd, 2026 by

Super Cruise runs on a network of LiDAR-mapped roads built around divided highways, and Interstate 35E is a divided interstate that carries traffic north from Waxahachie through Red Oak, Glenn Heights, DeSoto and Lancaster into Dallas. Whether a particular stretch is compatible on the day you drive it is confirmed by the vehicle, not by a printed list. When Super Cruise detects a compatible road and the other driving conditions are met, the Super Cruise symbol illuminates in white on the instrument cluster.

That distinction matters, because GM adds roads to the network periodically through over-the-air updates delivered by your OnStar Super Cruise plan, and recent construction can take a section offline until it is remapped. Before a trip you can look up compatible roads on GM’s Super Cruise map. Behind the wheel, the white indicator is the answer.

Super Cruise is a hands-free driver assistance feature for use only on compatible roads; the driver must remain attentive. It is not an autonomous driving system. Always pay attention while driving and when using Super Cruise. Always use Super Cruise in accordance with local laws. Do not use a hand-held device. Requires active Super Cruise plan or trial. Terms apply.

How Large Is the Super Cruise Road Network?

Super Cruise covers more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads across the United States and Canada, and the network now extends well beyond the interstate system it launched on. GM has expanded it in stages, adding divided highways first and later major and minor highways that connect smaller cities and townships, all mapped with high-precision LiDAR.

New roads reach the vehicle over the air at no additional charge rather than through a service visit, and map information updates periodically through the OnStar Super Cruise plan. If you want the full picture of how the system works and what the three activation steps look like, our Super Cruise overview page walks through it.

Which 2026 GMC Models Offer Super Cruise Hands-Free Technology?

For the 2026 model year, Super Cruise reaches further across the GMC lineup than the trucks it started on. Availability is concentrated in the upper trims, where it is either standard equipment or a factory option. Confirm Super Cruise on any other 2026 GMC model, and on any specific build, before you order.

GM also lists the GMC Sierra EV and the GMC HUMMER EV SUV among the GMC vehicles that offer Super Cruise with Hands-Free Trailering capability. Every Super Cruise-equipped vehicle includes three years of connectivity to support the feature, after which an eligible OnStar plan — either a stand-alone Super Cruise plan or an OnStar One plan — must be purchased to continue using it. Our OnStar and connected services page covers how those plans work.

What You Need to Activate Super Cruise

Three vehicle settings have to be in the right position before the system will arm. Adaptive Cruise Control must be on. The Forward Collision System must be set to Alert and Brake. Teen Driver must be off. You also need an active and eligible OnStar Super Cruise Plan or trial, since the system depends on a data connection for precise positioning and map updates.

When those boxes are checked and the vehicle is on a compatible road with visible lane markings and a clear view of the driver, the Super Cruise symbol appears in white. Press the Super Cruise button on the steering wheel when it is safe to do so. Once the symbol and the steering wheel light bar turn green, you can take your hands off the wheel. Do not remove your hands until the light bar is green.

Why Super Cruise Might Not Activate on I-35E Despite Being a Major Highway

Even on a mapped road, real-time conditions decide whether hands-free driving is permitted at any given moment. The system relies on cameras and radar sensors around the vehicle, and on an interior camera that confirms the driver is looking at the road. Any of the following will keep it from engaging or cause it to hand control back:

  • Lane markings that are missing, faded, or obscured by rain, snow, road spray, or sun glare on the pavement.
  • Camera or radar sensors covered by snow, ice, dirt, or other contaminants.
  • Tunnels and construction zones, and sections where recent road reconstruction has outdated the map.
  • Driving faster than 85 mph. Super Cruise also becomes unavailable if you are more than 10 mph over the posted limit on a compatible non-divided road.
  • Objects such as cups, food, or hands blocking the Driver Attention System camera’s view of your face, or a steering column angled too high or too low for the camera to see you.
  • Exit lanes, road shoulders, and service drives.

If the symbol does not appear, press the Super Cruise button to bring up a Driver Information Center message explaining why the system is unavailable. If it disengages, pressing the button within ten seconds will display the reason.

On select 2026 Super Cruise-equipped models, Hands-On Steering Assist can take over lane centering when a hands-free compatible road is not available, working alongside Adaptive Cruise Control while you keep your hands on the wheel.

How the Driver Attention System Keeps You Engaged

Super Cruise is a hands-free system, not an eyes-off one. An interior camera monitors your head and eye position the entire time the system is engaged, and it escalates in three stages if it decides your attention has drifted.

First, the steering wheel light bar flashes green to prompt you back to the road. If that continues too long, the light bar flashes red and either beeps sound or the Safety Alert Seat vibrates, telling you to look up and steer manually. If the red flashing continues, a voice prompt instructs you to take over. Should you still not respond, the vehicle slows in its lane and brakes to a stop, and an Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisor calls into the vehicle to check on you. Super Cruise and Adaptive Cruise Control both disengage at that point.

Can You Use Super Cruise While Towing a Trailer?

Yes, on vehicles built with Super Cruise trailering capability. Hands-Free Trailering is exclusive to Super Cruise, and GM offers it across a wide range of vehicles, including the GMC Sierra 1500, Sierra EV, Acadia, Yukon and Yukon XL, HUMMER EV Pickup, and HUMMER EV SUV.

There is no setup step. The system is ready as soon as you plug in the trailer’s electrical connector, and if the trailer has no electrical connection, the vehicle’s sensors detect it and adjust automatically. From there the vehicle works out the trailer’s weight on its own by measuring drive force against acceleration, refining that estimate as you drive, and it adapts its acceleration, braking, and steering to match. It also lengthens the gap to the vehicle ahead to allow for the longer stopping distance a loaded trailer requires.

Two limits are worth knowing before you order. Turn Signal Activated Lane Change and Automatic Lane Change are both unavailable while trailering, though hands-free lane centering continues to work normally. And on the Sierra 1500, Super Cruise is not available when the vehicle is ordered with the NHT Max Trailering Package, so buyers who want both hands-free driving and the maximum trailering setup should talk through the configuration before committing.

Frequently Asked Questions About GMC Super Cruise on Texas Highways

Does Super Cruise work through active construction zones on I-35E?

No. Construction zones are among the situations where Super Cruise should not be activated, and the system does not steer to avoid them. Recent road reconstruction can also take a section out of the map until it is remapped. Expect to steer manually through active work zones.

How fast will Super Cruise operate on Texas interstates?

Super Cruise uses your Adaptive Cruise Control set speed and becomes unavailable above 85 mph. It may also slow the vehicle around sharp curves. On a compatible non-divided road, it becomes unavailable if you exceed the posted speed limit by more than 10 mph.

Do I need an active OnStar plan to keep using Super Cruise after three years?

Yes. Every Super Cruise-equipped vehicle includes three years of connectivity to support the feature. After that period, an eligible OnStar plan — either a stand-alone Super Cruise plan or an OnStar One plan — must be purchased to maintain the precise positioning and periodic map updates the system depends on.

Will Super Cruise automatically steer around debris or stopped emergency vehicles?

No. Super Cruise will not steer to avoid safety situations or objects. You need to take control to steer around a traffic situation or object, merge, exit the highway, make a turn, or stop for crossing traffic or a traffic control device.
