2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD & 3500 HD Oil Type and Capacity
The 2026 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD are offered with two engine choices — the 6.6L V8 gas (RPO L8T) and the 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 (RPO L5P). Each engine has its own GM-specified oil type, viscosity, capacity, and filter. Knowing the exact factory requirements for your engine protects your warranty and supports peak performance under load.
This page covers the verified factory specifications for both engines, written for Sierra HD owners and shoppers in Waxahachie, Midlothian, DeSoto, Ennis, Corsicana, and Arlington who want the specs straight without the guesswork.
Quick Reference: 2026 Sierra HD Oil Specifications
| Spec | 6.6L V8 Gas (L8T) | 6.6L Duramax Diesel (L5P) |
|---|---|---|
| Oil capacity (with filter) | 8.0 quarts (7.57 L) | 10.0 quarts (9.5 L) |
| Viscosity (standard) | SAE 5W-30 | SAE 15W-40 |
| Viscosity (sustained cold) | 5W-30 (no change needed) | SAE 5W-40 below −15°F (−26°C) |
| Specification | dexos1 Gen 3 (API SP) | API CK-4 (CJ-4 also accepted) |
| OEM oil filter | ACDelco PF63 | ACDelco PF63 |
| Engine type | Naturally aspirated gas V8 | Turbocharged diesel V8 |
Key point: The 2500 HD and the 3500 HD use the same oil capacity for the same engine. The 6.6L Duramax takes 10 quarts in both trucks. The chassis size does not change the engine’s oil requirements.
6.6L V8 Gas (L8T) Oil Specifications
The 6.6L V8 L8T is the standard engine across the 2026 Sierra HD lineup. It produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, paired with the Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
Oil Type and Viscosity
GM specifies SAE 5W-30 full synthetic motor oil meeting the dexos1 Gen 3 specification. Dexos1 Gen 3 has been GM’s active gasoline engine oil standard since September 2021, replacing the now-obsolete Gen 2. Any major-brand full synthetic 5W-30 carrying the dexos1 Gen 3 license on the bottle is the correct choice — Mobil 1, Castrol EDGE, Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic, Pennzoil Platinum, and ACDelco dexos1 Gen 3 all qualify.
Dexos1 Gen 3 includes API SP as its base API category. Older API ratings (SN, SN Plus) are legacy specs and no longer represent current GM requirements. If the bottle carries the dexos1 Gen 3 license, the API SP requirement is automatically satisfied.
Oil Capacity
8.0 quarts (7.57 liters) with a filter change. Block-only (dry) capacity is 7.6 quarts — the extra 0.4 quart accounts for the volume the new filter holds when filled.
Can You Use 0W-20 in the 6.6L Gas?
Short answer: no. The L8T is engineered around 5W-30. Dropping to 0W-20 in a naturally aspirated heavy-duty V8 that’s regularly asked to tow, haul, and run at sustained high-load operating temperatures reduces the protective oil film exactly where the engine needs it most — at the bearings, cam followers, and cylinder walls under load.
0W-20 is the correct viscosity for smaller, lighter-duty engines like the L84 5.3L or L87 6.2L V8s in the half-ton Sierra 1500, both of which GM specifies for 0W-20. The L8T is a different engine with different design parameters and a different viscosity recommendation. Stick with 5W-30.
6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 (L5P) Oil Specifications
The 6.6L Duramax L5P is the available diesel option across the Sierra HD lineup. For 2026 it produces 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. The L5P is the same engine in both the 2500 HD and the 3500 HD — same block, same oil pan, same lubrication system, and same oil capacity.
Oil Type and Viscosity
The L5P requires heavy-duty diesel engine oil meeting API CK-4 (API CJ-4 is also accepted per GM service documentation). The recommended viscosity is SAE 15W-40 for most operating climates. For sustained cold-weather operation below −15°F (−26°C), GM specifies SAE 5W-40 instead.
Common quality choices that meet API CK-4: Shell Rotella T6 (5W-40 full synthetic for cold-weather use, 15W-40 for standard), Mobil Delvac 1300 Super 15W-40, Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme, and ACDelco’s diesel engine oil line.
Critical: The L5P Does NOT Use dexos1, dexos2, or dexosD
This is a frequent point of confusion at the parts counter. Each “dexos” specification is for a different engine family:
| Specification | Applies To | Does NOT Apply To |
|---|---|---|
| dexos1 Gen 3 | GM gasoline engines (including the 6.6L L8T) | 6.6L L5P Duramax |
| dexos2 | European GM diesel engines | North American Duramax |
| dexosD | 3.0L inline-six Duramax (LM2/LZ0 — Sierra 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, Escalade) | 6.6L L5P Duramax |
| API CK-4 / CJ-4 | 6.6L L5P Duramax in the Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD | — |
Using dexosD 0W-20 (the 3.0L spec) in a 6.6L L5P under towing loads is a serious mistake. The viscosity isn’t sufficient for the L5P’s bearing clearances and turbocharger demands, and bearing damage can result. For the 6.6L L5P, the simple rule: API CK-4 15W-40 full synthetic, or 5W-40 if you operate in sustained sub-zero conditions.
Oil Capacity
10.0 quarts (9.5 liters) with a filter change. Block-only (dry) capacity is 9.2 quarts.
This is the same for the 2500 HD and the 3500 HD — covered in detail in the next section.
Why the 2500 HD and 3500 HD Use the Same Oil Capacity
A common source of confusion: shoppers see that the 3500 HD has higher payload and towing ratings than the 2500 HD and assume the 3500 HD must have a bigger engine and a different oil capacity. It doesn’t.
The 2500 HD and 3500 HD share:
- The same 6.6L Duramax L5P engine (when diesel-equipped)
- The same 6.6L V8 L8T engine (when gas-equipped)
- The same engine block, oil pan, and filtration system
- The same oil capacity per engine
The differences between the 2500 HD and 3500 HD are in the chassis, suspension, axles, frame, rear wheel configuration, and gross vehicle weight ratings — not in the powertrain’s lubrication needs. A 3500 HD dual rear wheel configuration can pull up to 36,000 lbs with a gooseneck or fifth-wheel hitch, where a 2500 HD maxes at 22,390 lbs — but that capability comes from chassis and drivetrain hardware, not from a different engine. Both engines drink the same oil in the same quantity.
If a parts counter, a mechanic, or an article tells you the 3500 HD takes 13 or 15 quarts of oil, that’s an error that gets repeated often. The factory spec is 10 quarts with a filter change, regardless of which HD chassis the L5P sits in.
If you’re still deciding between the 2500 HD and the 3500 HD, the differences in capability are covered in detail on our 2026 Sierra 2500 HD Trims & Pricing and Sierra 2500 HD Towing Capacity pages.
Oil Filter Specifications
For the 2026 Sierra HD, GM’s recommended oil filter for both the 6.6L gas L8T and the 6.6L diesel L5P is the ACDelco PF63. Current GM part number: 12735811.
| Spec | ACDelco PF63 |
|---|---|
| Style | Spin-on cartridge |
| Filtration efficiency | 30 microns |
| Burst strength | 253.8 PSI |
| Media | Advanced polyester |
| Fits | 6.6L L8T gas and 6.6L L5P diesel (Sierra/Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD) |
| Supersedes | Earlier PF26 reference and prior PF63 part numbers |
A note on the 2024 design update: GM redesigned the PF63 in 2024 with a slimmer body to improve clearance around the oil cooler on newer L5P engines. The current OEM part (PN 12735811) is the right filter for the 2026 model year. Both the older PF26 and earlier PF63 variants are still cross-compatible per GM’s filter reference, but the current PN is what’s spec’d from the factory.
One filter serves both engines in this application. Same PF63, different oil — that’s the setup.
Oil Change Intervals
GMC’s general guidance for both the 6.6L L8T gas and the 6.6L L5P diesel:
| Service Type | Recommended Interval | Applies When |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Service | Approximately 7,500 miles | Daily commuting, occasional light towing, average driving conditions |
| Severe Service | Approximately 5,000 miles | Frequent towing at rated capacity, extended idling, heavy stop-and-go, dusty conditions, or frequent short trips that don’t allow full engine warm-up |
The 12,000-mile factory interval that older GM gasoline vehicles sometimes carried is not applicable to the L8T or L5P heavy-duty engines — these are spec’d to shorter intervals because of how the engines are used.
The Right Spec, the Right Truck
The 2026 GMC Sierra HD is built for the kind of work that makes oil choice matter. Quick recap:
- 6.6L V8 Gas (L8T): 8 quarts of dexos1 Gen 3 5W-30, ACDelco PF63 filter
- 6.6L Duramax Diesel (L5P): 10 quarts of API CK-4 15W-40, ACDelco PF63 filter
- Same engine = same capacity, whether you’re driving a 2500 HD or a 3500 HD
- Roughly 7,500 miles normal / 5,000 miles severe service for both engines
